Amherst College

Amherst College SSDP, which was founded last semester, is an outgrowth of a drug reform group that was in existence for two years.  During the past semester, ACSSDP got the HEA Resolution passed in the Student Government.

Furthermore, ACSSDP brought Director Ron Mann to campus where his film, “Grass” was shown.  Journalist Bill Weinberg spoke to over 100 students about the situation in Colombia.

The group plans to continue its successful recruitment of informative guest lecturers. The next speaker that ACSSDP plans to bring to campus is Sylvester Salcedo, a Lieutenant who returned his Medal of Honor to President Clinton in protest of the War on Drugs. The group plans to collect signatures for a petition in protest of the current situation in Colombia.  Andrew Epstein, who leads the chapter, says that the group is hoping to also bring in Ethan Nadelmann of the Lindesmith Center-DPF to present a lecture on the actual effects of drugs used commonly on college campuses, especially Ecstasy.
